Artist Profile

Xander Calceta

a Filipino visual artist wherein he specializes in oil painting. His approach and style in painting is contemporary impressionism, a term used to describe works created by contemporary artists that share similar aesthetic qualities with those by the French Impressionists. Xander is fond of painting figures in dramatic moments, most likely figures in landscape or interior settings. He likes to paint something that can easily grasp by ordinary audience, paintings which can create possible numbers of stories behind it.

Xander is a self taught artist. He began painting at the early age of 8 using any materials available that time to practice his arts. He developed his techniques in oil painting during his 20’s. He has read many books about oil paintings especially the art of the impressionists. He exchanged thoughts and ideas with fellow artists that he liked to imitate, one of which is Morgan Weistling whom he considered his mentor.

He has his first group show in 2007 and since then he has been participating in some of the big events and art exhibits in the Philippines. His first solo show was held in Metropolitan Museum of Manila wherein he showcased his early works of landscapes, still life, figures, portraits and other commissioned works from the past clients. His last solo show was in 2015 wherein he exhibited oil paintings of still life in contemporary arrangement and his main characters in the composition are stuff toys. He also exhibited his artworks outside the country specifically in New York and in Texas.
