ManilART’s theme for this year is ‘A New Contemporary’

The Artologist, one of the Philippines’ premier art galleries, is thrilled to announce that it will feature the exceptional works of three distinguished Filipino artists for the upcoming ManilART 2023: JunYee, Nestor Vinluan, and Virgilio “Pandy” Aviado.

ManilART 2023, the Philippines’ inaugural and most enduring visual arts exhibition, is scheduled to take place from October 11 to 15, 2023, at the SMX Aura Convention Center in Taguig City.

Under the theme “A New Contemporary,” the fair will feature a broad spectrum of artistic creations by more than 200 artists, including both established and celebrated figures such as Ramon Orlina, Romulo Galicano, Tiny Nuyda, Jose Tence Ruiz, Pandy Aviado, and Edwin Wilwayco.

The Artologist Gallery, founded by Ron de Castro in 2013, has evolved into one of the most prolific art hubs in the Philippines. It serves as a haven for artists to enhance their craft and showcase their masterpieces.

The gallery boasts over 100 artists in its main gallery roster and has expanded to satellite galleries at Shangri-La Plaza Mall and Ayala Malls Manila Bay.

The Artologist Gallery has organized exhibits at prominent locations and supplied artworks to notable establishments both locally and internationally.

Ron de Castro, the founder of The Artologist Gallery, emphasizes the timeless relevance of art, saying, “Art is timeless. It will never disappear, whether it’s a documentation of the time period, a cultural unifier, or a tool that drives one’s emotion, from classic masterpieces to digital art forms.”

For the upcoming ManilART 2023, The Artologist will trumpet the works of three esteemed Filipino artists:

1.    JunYee, frequently acknowledged as “the Pioneer of Installation Art in the Philippines,” has committed his artistic journey to the documentation and investigation of Filipino culture. He demonstrates a strong environmental ethos by creatively incorporating indigenous materials like naturally-felled timber, bamboo, foliage, branches, and seed pods into his sculptures. Residing in the verdant environs of Mount Makiling, JunYee’s collections, notably the celebrated Wood Things series, serve as a testament to his distinctive artistic perspective.

2.    Nestor Vinluan, a renowned abstractionist, educator, and a prominent figure in Philippine Art, has received recognition for his finely-crafted and deeply personal depictions of nature. In addition to his artistic achievements, Vinluan’s impact on the art world extends beyond his creative output. He holds the prestigious title of the Most Outstanding Fulbright Alumni in Arts and Humanities (2008) and has served as a former Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines. Currently holding the esteemed position of Professor Emeritus, Vinluan’s influence transcends his artwork. Art historian Rodolfo Paras-Perez has aptly described his creations as “strangely mesmerizing.”

3.    Virgilio “Pandy” Aviado, born in 1944, is celebrated for his exceptional skills in fine printmaking and his steadfast dedication to fostering emerging talents in the Philippine art community. Aviado’s enduring legacy is further highlighted by his influential roles as the President of the Art Association of the Philippines and his leadership as the director of the Cultural Center of the Philippines Visual Arts Coordinating Center. His artistic odyssey, characterized by exhibitions held in Europe, the United States, and Asia, serves as a testament to his profound influence on the international art stage.

The Artologist’s space for ManilART 2023 will be located at Booth A-7 at the SMX Aura in Taguig City.

A very interesting art exhibition will be featured at the Shangri-La Plaza on February 1-7, 2021.

The “Quartet” Exhibition was conceived by Ron and Bambi de Castro of The Artologist in 2017 yet. By then the couple had met four individuals well-known in their respective fields – but who also happened to be artists in their own right!

The Artologist Transforms Your Basic Handbags into Works of Art

By Philippine Primer on September 16, 2018

For an artist, a blank canvas is a gateway to innumerable possibilities, and once an idea strikes, there is no turning back. Simple should never be an excuse; ordinary should now be out of the picture, and in its place, an artist can work his magic freely with a stream of colors as his weapon; and no matter what the canvas is, surely artists can make something more profound out of a blank space– be it an extensive white wall or something as functional as a handbag!

As a home of artists in the Philippines, The Artologist transforms the ordinary into extraordinary, as they revolutionize plain handbags into something trendy, placing you at the cutting edge of fashion. So, if you find yourself getting tired of your old handbag, The Artologist can paint just about any bag you want!

How It Started

Being a gallery of extensive masterpieces, specifically of paintings by equally talented artists, The Artologist commissions handbags from their clients. This started when a client turned over her Hermes bag, tired as she was with the plain, navy blue canvas. From here, a new tasteful, avant-garde handbag was born, courtesy of Monnar Baldemor and his mindscape oeuvre.

How It Works

To commission a painted handbag, each client only has to visit The Artologist’s website at www.theartologist.net and choose an artist by clicking on “Artists” in the topmost part of the screen and by scrolling through the variety of artists, where clients can peruse the artists’ different styles and art techniques.

In the artist’s profile, you may fill out a commission work form and submit it to The Artologist online. From here, it would usually take 30 to 45 days to finish the commissioned piece depending on the artist of choice, and voila! You have yourself a brand new bag which also supports the artistry of our local art geniuses!

For more information on commissions and prices, you may call one of their branches at either Greenhills (634-0100) or at Shangri-La (696-3200) or send them an e-mail at [email protected].

Identity Exhibit at Manila Art 2017

By NOEL SALES BARCELONA on October 9, 2018

Since its Inception in 2013, The Artologist has become one of the premier art hubs in the Philippines today. From its humble beginnings as a small art gallery in Eisenhower Street in the busy City of San Juan in Metro Manila. The Artologist has now become the home for budding and mid-career artists in the country, focusing primarily on contemporary and post-modern art.

But The Artologist is more than a gallery. It is also a place of discovery and of development for those individuals who want to hone their craft as an artist. or to rekindle their passion in creating things that entice – and soothe – the senses with the help of brushes, color palette, and canvas. Because of this years after it was founded, The Artologist has gained the reputation of being one of best independent ad learning facilities and showrooms in the country.

Aside from organizing its own exhibits in its main gallery in Xavier Street, while maintaining a branch (Happy Art/ Abstrak Art) in Tiendesitas, a shopping destination in Pasig City, The Artologist  also ventured into joining local and international art fairs. It has also exhibited in big shopping malls and prestigious hotels in the country such as Okada Manila.

THE ARTOLOGIST Gallery had had for its theme for the MANILART 2018 the term “Identity.”  Human beings do have unique DNAs that set them apart from the rest of the creatures living here on earth and elsewhere. In the art world, each stroke or curve or dent or color that the artist use in creating his or her works, will serve as that identifying mark, that unique artistic DNA strand which will help spectators—both the ordinary folk and the “learned” when it comes to art and culture—easily identify whose work is this painting or that sculpture. Under IDENTITY, eight (8) seasoned artists—painters and sculptors—will approach their audience with their own unique identity as creators, storytellers, advocates of contemporary art in the Philippines, and as people that are part and parcel of the evolving and devolving society.  Since these artists come from different backgrounds and had had different experiences as artists and as human beings the theme—and the collection or the set of artworks on display—will also underscore the beauty of particularity, universality, and of course diversity and individuality. Each work tells the audience different “stories”, “narrated” by different voices, using different approach, which resulted to a beautiful and exciting interplay of various experiences, different beliefs and philosophies, and dissimilar approach when it comes to giving meaning to what is art and what is beauty—all condensed in artworks presented in the fair. Monnar Baldemor’s works will be about Life, Love and Religion using his fluid and unique style that involves distortions and interplay of lines, curves and colors. Conneth Amido, on the other hand, will show the lives and the struggles of the ordinary folks, the workers in particular, in his mixed media arts. The only muse of the show, Jo Balbarona but also one of the tougher ones when it comes to doing sculptures, will present a different kind of “pet,” that is often seen in the academe, in the workplace, and of course, in local and international politics. Skulls and dogs, actually, are really going well together in a single set of work. Showing his knowhow in architecture and the arts, Jonathan Dangue’s new series of sculptures will show the audience how an artist can be “a god”—transforming a type of metal (brass), into works that show fluidity and movement. Adam Nacianceno and Francis Von Caro, meanwhile, will show in their works the beauty of the interplay of light and shadow in the paintings painted in black and white. Meanwhile, Eymard Paguiligan’s works of being with colored wings bring into the fore the symbol of the Consciousness, the soul which is eternal, primordial, and indestructible. And lastly, Julmard Vicente, whose works are the combination of winged creatures (birds and butterflies) and human beings, which symbolize the longing of one’s spirit to soar, to be free. Interestingly the works of these eight wonderful and talented people are interrelated to each other, in one or other means. As mentioned earlier, as they are representation of the artists’ collective perception of the reality that surrounds them, which is also same reality that surrounds the ordinary folk. Moreover, the archetypes used are often used to represent the inner longings of each and one of us as human beings, as creatures with higher intelligence and with the concept of freedom, free will, and higher aspirations. To sum it all up, the artworks under IDENTITY show not only the artistic abilities and sensibilities of these eight participating artists but also showcase their own unique style, which make the artworks on show, truly their own and theirs alone.
